Figma has recently expanded its artificial intelligence capabilities, following earlier collaborations with OpenAI and Anthropic to integrate AI command-line interface tools like Claude Code and Codex into its design software. These partnerships allowed users to leverage advanced coding environments alongside their design work. Now, the company is introducing its own innovative AI intelligence through a new agent designed to operate directly within its collaborative canvas.
This new AI agent empowers users to employ natural language text prompts to generate novel designs, modify existing ones, or automate repetitive tasks, such as creating multiple iterations of a design. Furthermore, users have the flexibility to activate several agents concurrently, enabling them to tackle diverse tasks simultaneously.
Figma asserts that its AI assistant possesses a deep understanding of design contexts and elements, attributing this capability to its underlying AI models, which have been specifically fine-tuned for design-centric applications.
Loredana Crisan, Figma’s chief design officer, emphasized the strategic shift this represents: “As building software gets easier, what matters most is setting direction: deciding what to work on, how it should function, what the experience should feel like. Teams can now collaborate with agents on the multiplayer canvas to test out ideas, visualize edge cases, and refine concepts together without over-indexing on the more tedious parts.”
The initial launch of this AI agent will be within Figma Design, with plans to progressively roll it out to the company's other products. Figma also articulated a long-term vision to further bridge the gap between design and code integration across its applications.
In a highly competitive landscape, facing rivals such as Canva, Adobe, Flora, Krea, and Dessn, Figma has made strategic moves including the acquisition of the node-based design tool Weavy last year, alongside the introduction of new image editing functionalities to its product suite.
Despite prevailing concerns about AI potentially diminishing the role of designers and the demand for their tools, Figma has demonstrated robust performance. The company reported impressive revenue of $333.4 million in the first quarter of 2026, marking a substantial 46% increase compared to the previous year.
