Design platform Figma unveiled a new Markdown-based editor at its first Config event in India. This tool helps companies define their design systems, incorporate libraries, and link with the Payload headless content management system. The aim is to provide a standard that both Figma and third-party agents can follow to better adhere to brand design rules during AI-assisted creation.

The company introduced a feature known as Figma Specs, a markdown editor designed to let users define their design language simply. This document serves as a reference for teams and agents while they design within the platform. Specs can exist as a standalone file or coexist directly on the canvas. Beyond being a text editor, users can reference other elements like canvas designs, embed FigJam diagrams, and include code layers.

Furthermore, teams can import additional design context, such as design and code libraries and guidelines, to manage the design system effectively. This centralized system allows agents to reference specific rules to ensure compliance.

In the past week, Figma expanded access to its agent-on-canvas functionality to a broader user base. However, acknowledging the non-deterministic nature of AI, the company is introducing tools to steer the technology toward more predictable and consistent outcomes.

Figma also released its code layers feature, which adds coding to designs on the canvas to create more interactive prototypes. Originally announced in private beta in June, this feature is now available in public beta. Users can request agents to convert a design into code or modify specific code segments to iterate on prototypes.

"We see Figma as the place where software teams come to decide what they build and ship. And so for that, I think one of the key things to keep in mind about what AI has changed and what it made available is the ability to build," stated Figma’s chief design officer Loredana Crisan in an interview with TechCrunch. She noted that while there are 17 times more lines of code produced today than in the past, software releases have only increased 1.3 times. Crisan explained that much of this code is not necessarily built to ship but is instead used to design and discover product concepts.

The company announced support for over 20 new tools using its Model Context Protocol (MCP), including Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam.

Last year, Figma acquired the open-source headless CMS Payload. The company is now integrating it with Figma Make to generate dynamic websites and manage content directly. Figma reported that Payload downloads have increased sixfold over the last 12 months.

Figma opened its first office in India late last year to handle sales, partnerships, go-to-market strategies, and product support. The company identified India as its largest market outside the United States and highlighted that the platform is used by 40% of the top 100 companies listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange.
