Figma is set to integrate OpenAI's AI coding tool, Codex, empowering users to develop and refine designs directly within their coding environments. This strategic move closely follows a similar collaboration established just last week with Anthropic, which saw the integration of Claude Code.
This upcoming integration will facilitate a seamless workflow, allowing users to initiate projects either by designing in Figma or coding in Codex, and then effortlessly transition between the two platforms, leveraging Figma’s proprietary Mobile Context Protocol (MCP) server.
Previously, users had the capability to import detailed information from Figma design files, Figma Make, or FigJam directly into Codex for subsequent code-based implementation.
Loredan Crisan, Figma’s Chief Design Officer, articulated the vision behind this partnership, stating, “With this integration, teams can build on their best ideas—not just their first idea—by combining the best of code with the creativity, collaboration, and craft that comes with Figma’s infinite canvas.”
Alexander Embiricos, Product Lead for Codex, further elaborated in a statement: “The integration makes Codex powerful for a much broader range of builders and businesses because it doesn’t assume you’re ‘a designer’ or ‘an engineer’ first. Engineers can iterate visually without leaving their flow, and designers can work closer to real implementation without becoming full-time coders.”
OpenAI initially introduced Codex last year as a command-line coding assistant, aiming to compete with Anthropic’s highly acclaimed Claude Code. Subsequently, the company integrated this coding tool into ChatGPT and, earlier this month, unveiled a dedicated MacOS application for Codex.
The MacOS application achieved significant traction, garnering a million downloads within its inaugural week of release. Days later, OpenAI further expanded its offerings by releasing two new Codex models. The company also reported that over a million users are actively utilizing Codex on a weekly basis.
Figma has established itself as a key partner for OpenAI, notably being among the first companies to launch an application within ChatGPT in October 2025.
