OpenAI’s Fidji Simo is stepping down from her full-time position as the company's AGI chief, transitioning into a "part-time advisor" capacity, as she announced on X.
This development follows Simo's initial disclosure in April, where she revealed plans to take several weeks of medical leave due to a neuroimmune condition. This announcement came shortly after her appointment to the AGI chief title, having previously served as the company’s CEO of applications. Concurrently, other significant leadership changes occurred within OpenAI: COO Brad Lightcap transitioned from his role to concentrate on "special projects," and CMO Kate Rouch also stepped down to prioritize her health, with plans to return to a "more narrowly scoped role" when her condition improved, as Simo had stated at the time.
Simo's April announcement initiated a series of C-suite reconfigurations over subsequent months. During her medical leave, OpenAI President Greg Brockman assumed leadership of product initiatives, including the company's super app endeavors, while CSO Jason Kwon, CFO Sarah Friar, and CRO Denise Dresser collectively oversaw the business operations.
Approximately one month later, in mid-May, a further company reorganization reshaped responsibilities. Greg Brockman formally took charge of OpenAI’s product strategy and "scaling" efforts, overseeing four key pillars: core product and platform; critical enterprise industries; consumer applications (including health, commerce, and personal finance); and core infrastructure, advertising, data science, and growth. In an internal memo from May, seen by The Verge, Brockman explained that this restructuring aimed to advance the company's AI agent objectives by consolidating products to “invest in a single agentic platform and to merge ChatGPT and Codex into one unified agentic experience for all.”
“Three months ago, I had to go on medical leave after a severe exacerbation of a chronic illness I’ve lived with for seven years,” Simo shared on X. “During that time, it became clear that the road to recovery would be much longer and more complex than I had anticipated—and that I needed to focus on it fully… It has been a jarring experience to spend my days helping build the future while simultaneously navigating a disabling disease that still has no cure.”
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his sentiments on X, stating he was “really sad about this” and conveyed his gratitude to Simo.
