The concept of voice as the next major interface is gaining significant momentum, with investors funneling billions into voice AI startups spanning model development to enterprise customer service and productivity tools.
While new models and tools are released weekly claiming to mimic human conversation, the reality is often different. Shawn Wen, CTO of the enterprise voice AI platform PolyAI, believes that voice technology has not yet achieved its "ChatGPT moment" despite the development of full-duplex models capable of listening and speaking simultaneously.
"We have reached the milestone of developing full-duplex models. The next challenge is to make reasoning very fast, so that the models can fetch answers quickly and the conversation feels natural," Wen stated during the HumanX conference.
He further noted that AI agents in customer service must avoid sounding robotic to instill confidence in callers, suggesting that as the voice quality improves, users will eventually prefer AI over human agents if the problem is solved efficiently.
Similarly, Alex Gay, CMO for the meeting note-taking app Otter, emphasized the importance of speaker identification, intent capture, and integration with organizational knowledge for automation. He argued that digital twins used in meetings must possess emotive expressions to facilitate strategic debates and relationship building, rather than functioning as simple chatbots.
Despite advancements, current voice assistants frequently misunderstand users or produce incorrect transcripts. Both executives pointed out that ASR models often miss critical keywords, leading to a lack of context. Gay explained that improving transcription accuracy is critical because flawed foundational data undermines all downstream productivity gains and user trust.
Finally, the article highlights the necessity of transparency. Companies like Otter and PolyAI are pushing for clear disclosures that meetings or calls are being recorded or conducted with AI to build trust among users.
