Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha, the visionary minds behind Spotify’s acclaimed recommendation engine, have channeled their expertise into a new venture. They spent years developing Vector AI, a sophisticated behavioral intelligence infrastructure that predicts user intent and subsequent actions, moving beyond mere reliance on past behavior. This innovative system currently powers approximately 90% of Spotify's recommendations for its vast base of 800 million users.
Now, the trio is introducing a similar advanced system to the e-commerce sector with their new startup, Malachyte. The company recently announced it has secured $10 million in seed funding. This capital infusion is earmarked for scaling distribution and expanding its team with key product and commercial leadership hires.
Malachyte was founded on the conviction that most online retail experiences fall short in true personalization. Current approaches often treat shoppers uniformly, with personalization largely constrained by historical purchases, demographic data, or existing customer profiles. This results in a generic storefront for first-time visitors and recommendations for returning shoppers that are based on what they previously bought, rather than their immediate needs or evolving preferences.
The startup aims to revolutionize this landscape by crafting real-time, intent-aware shopping experiences. Malachyte's platform leverages what it terms "two-headed Vector AI" to anticipate a shopper's next desired product, discern their general taste, and continuously fine-tune recommendations based on their real-time interactions.
“Our system starts forming before the first click, using the context available the moment the page loads. Within a single session, we build a real read on both preferences and what someone is trying to accomplish right now,” explained Sidd Motwani, Malachyte’s CEO, in an interview with TechCrunch.
Motwani elaborated on the system's responsiveness: “A search for ‘heavy-duty boot’ followed by two clicks on steel-toed boots is enough to move work pants and gloves up the page and push dress shoes down, with no account or history required. Every additional action sharpens the profile, so the experience gets more relevant the longer someone stays, and again on their next visit.”
Motwani contends that retailers already possess their most valuable source of customer intelligence but frequently fail to leverage it in real time.
“Every hover, click, scroll, search refinement and add-to-cart is a signal, and most systems either never act on it in the moment or aggregate it into a segment overnight. We read it continuously, so each action makes the user’s vector more confident about both preference and current intent,” he added.
He further highlights the significant underutilization of contextual signals in current retail systems.
“A phone visitor at 11 p.m. from an email link is in a different state of mind than the same person on a laptop mid-morning, and most systems treat them identically,” Motwani pointed out.
Malachyte has been developing and rigorously testing its technology since 2024. The company initially collaborated with over 20 enterprise customers across the travel, grocery, and broader retail sectors before strategically focusing its efforts on e-commerce.
The platform officially launched in the fall of 2025 with Fun.com. Since June 2026, it has been made generally available to Shopify merchants through a native integration, while larger retail enterprises can integrate the sophisticated technology via its API.
Looking to the future, Motwani believes the most significant opportunity lies in unifying merchandising and marketing strategies around a shared, deep understanding of customer behavior.
The seed funding round was co-led by prominent investors Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with additional participation from Harpoon Ventures.
