Despite divesting a significant portion of its public portfolio last month, Situational Awareness, the prominent AI-focused hedge fund, continues to execute substantial strategic investments.
This week, the fund committed an additional $400 million to Source Foundry, a burgeoning startup established by Stanford researchers dedicated to accelerating and economizing chip manufacturing processes, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. This latest infusion elevates Situational Awareness's total investment in Source Foundry to an impressive $500 million.
Situational Awareness was established in 2024 by Leopold Aschenbrenner, a former OpenAI researcher in his mid-twenties, who launched the fund without prior trading experience. While initial returns were reportedly robust, the fund has recently encountered significant losses, primarily attributed to the broader downturn in AI infrastructure stocks.
Towards the close of July, Situational Awareness divested the majority of its public holdings to Ken Griffin’s Citadel, notably retaining its shares in Anthropic. Consequently, the fund's assets under management reportedly decreased from $20 billion to $10 billion.
In a personal note, Mr. Aschenbrenner reportedly ensured that these recent business challenges did not impede his wedding plans.
