Elon Musk’s xAI Unveils Grok 4 and Premium SuperGrok Heavy
Originally reported bytechcrunch
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has launched its latest flagship model, Grok 4, while also introducing a high-end subscription service called SuperGrok Heavy at $300 per month. Grok, positioned as a competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, can analyze images and respond to user questions, and is now further integrated into Musk’s social network, X.  The unveiling of Grok 4 comes at a time when the expectations for advanced AI models are rising, with OpenAI set to release its GPT-5 later this year. Musk claimed during a livestream that Grok 4 performs at a level beyond most PhDs across academic fields, though he acknowledged it sometimes lacks common sense and has yet to make groundbreaking discoveries. This latest launch follows a challenging week for Musk’s companies. Linda Yaccarino, CEO of X, resigned just hours before the Grok 4 event, and the company is still seeking her replacement. Meanwhile, Grok’s automated X account sparked controversy by posting antisemitic comments, forcing xAI to restrict the account and delete the offensive content. In response, xAI removed a recent system prompt update that encouraged Grok to make more “politically incorrect” statements. Despite the controversy, xAI’s leadership focused on Grok 4’s technical achievements during the launch. xAI introduced two models: the standard Grok 4 and Grok 4 Heavy. Grok 4 Heavy is described as a “multi-agent” model where several AI agents tackle a problem together, then review each other’s work to select the best answer. According to xAI, Grok 4 achieves strong results on leading benchmarks, such as Humanity’s Last Exam, outperforming competitors like Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro and OpenAI’s latest models.  With the advanced version, Grok 4 Heavy, performance scores increase further when using additional tools. On the challenging ARC-AGI-2 benchmark, Grok set a new commercial standard, nearly doubling the next best model’s score. With these new releases, xAI aims to push the boundaries of AI technology and strengthen its position among top industry players.
