Elon Musk’s xAI Acquires Video Startup Hotshot
xAI has acquired Hotshot, a generative AI video startup, signaling plans to enhance its video capabilities.

Originally reported bytechcrunch
Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company, xAI, has acquired Hotshot, a startup specializing in AI-driven video generation tools, akin to OpenAI’s Sora. Aakash Sastry, Hotshot’s CEO and co-founder, shared the announcement on X, revealing that over the past two years, his team has developed three video foundation models: Hotshot-XL, Hotshot Act One, and Hotshot. These advancements provide insights into how education, entertainment, communication, and productivity will evolve in the near future. Sastry expressed enthusiasm about continuing this innovative work on xAI's extensive computational resources, known as Colossus.
Founded in San Francisco, Hotshot transitioned from developing AI-based photo creation tools to focusing on text-to-video AI models. Prior to the acquisition, the company attracted investment from notable venture capitalists, including Lachy Groom, Alexis Ohanian, and SV Angel, although it did not disclose specific funding amounts.
The acquisition suggests that xAI aims to create its own video generation models to compete with existing technologies like Sora and Google's Veo 2. Musk hinted at xAI's plans for video generation capabilities during a January livestream, stating that a “Grok Video” model is expected to launch in the coming months. Following the announcement, Hotshot informed its users that the platform would cease new video creation as of March 14, with existing customers having until March 30 to download their previously created videos.
While it remains uncertain if Hotshot's entire team will integrate into xAI, Sastry has refrained from providing details on this aspect. This acquisition marks a strategic move in the unfolding competition within the AI video generation space, highlighting the increasing importance of visual content in technology and communication.
