A verdict has been delivered in the high-profile OpenAI trial, marking a significant development in the legal proceedings.

Following approximately two hours of deliberation, the jury in the intensely watched case of Musk v. Altman, dubbed the tech trial of the year, returned a unanimous verdict. The jury determined that two of the claims presented were precluded by the statute of limitations, leading to the subsequent failure of a third claim due to the dismissal of one of the initial two.

It is crucial to note that this jury served in an advisory capacity. Its role was to provide an opinion to the presiding judge, and as such, its verdict does not carry legal binding authority. The ultimate legal determination and final decision will rest with US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers.

For three weeks, a federal courtroom in Oakland was the stage for Musk v. Altman, a case centered on grave accusations. The core allegation posited that OpenAI deviated from its foundational mission, and that funds contributed by Musk were specifically intended for a nonprofit entity. Musk contended that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and company president Greg Brockman violated OpenAI’s charitable trust and engaged in unjust enrichment at his expense. Furthermore, he alleged that Microsoft actively assisted and abetted Altman and Brockman in this breach of charitable trust. Throughout the proceedings, both parties seized opportunities to discredit one another, with salacious evidence and startling testimony ultimately leaving both sides with diminished credibility compared to the outset of the legal battle.

Specifically, the jury concluded that Musk’s claim concerning the breach of charitable trust was barred by the statute of limitations. Consequently, the related claim alleging that Microsoft aided and abetted this breach was also unsuccessful.
