Elon Musk has unveiled ambitious plans for a groundbreaking chip-building collaboration between his prominent companies, Tesla and SpaceX, aiming to address critical semiconductor shortages.

According to a Bloomberg report, Musk detailed these intentions on Saturday evening during an event held in downtown Austin, Texas. A photograph accompanying the announcement suggested that the proposed facility, which Musk refers to as the “Terafab,” is slated for construction in close proximity to Tesla’s Austin headquarters and its existing “gigafactory.”

Musk articulated that the impetus behind this significant undertaking stems from the current inability of external semiconductor manufacturers to produce chips at the necessary pace to meet the burgeoning artificial intelligence and robotics demands of his enterprises. He emphatically stated, “We either build the Terafab or we don’t have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build the Terafab.”

The visionary goal for this venture is to produce chips capable of supporting an astounding 100 to 200 gigawatts of computing power annually for terrestrial applications, alongside a formidable one terawatt for space-based operations, as outlined by Musk. However, a specific timeline for the realization of these plans was not provided.

Bloomberg highlighted that while Musk lacks a direct background in semiconductor manufacturing, he has a well-documented history of setting exceptionally high goals and, at times, overpromising on timelines for their completion.
