Over the Halloween weekend, users of Grok Bot encountered a surprising issue when their weekly usage limits were reached abruptly, even without heavy overnight usage. Several users on X reported that their available usage jumped from as little as 50% to 100%.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk clarified on an X post on Sunday that this was not a technical error. In a reply to a user, he explained that "The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue." While he has not discussed the specific issue on his main feed, he continues to promote the bot's capability to assist with purchasing gifts.
Grok Bot is currently highlighted as a major success for the newly public SpaceX. According to a filing from last month, AI now constitutes 52% of the company's total income. The company’s renamed "Super Intelligence" division generated a profit of $431 million, which stands out in the AI sector. However, this figure would have been higher if not for $1.2 billion in one-time expenses related to the acquisition of Cursor. Musk recently described the product as having "the fastest growth of a product that I’ve ever seen in my life."
Elon Musk has not yet announced how subscriber usage limits will be adjusted in the future.
