Elon Musk claims to have identified a solution to a significant bottleneck in the artificial intelligence sector by manufacturing a difficult-to-produce turbine component in-house.

On Saturday, Musk addressed speculation regarding a secret facility being constructed by SpaceX in Bastrop, Texas. This move was prompted by a report from The Information, which cited job listings mentioning a "blades and vanes foundry." The publication also referenced findings from Corey Trinetti, a due diligence analyst whose newsletter detailed SpaceX's purchase of approximately 830 acres near its Starlink facility between March and June.

Musk wrote on X that both SpaceX and Tesla are accelerating the construction of 100 gigawatts of solar production capacity annually. However, he noted that natural gas will be necessary to supplement solar power for several years. The primary limitation for natural gas turbine production is the casting of blades and vanes. By handling this process internally, Musk believes SpaceX can bring natural gas turbines online up to 18 months earlier, which he describes as a "profound game-changer."

The impetus for this strategy stems from the dual constraints currently facing the AI industry: GPU shortages and physical power grid limitations. The International Energy Agency forecasts that global data center electricity consumption will double by 2030. Meanwhile, gas turbine manufacturer GE Vernova reports it is fully booked with production capacity through 2030, largely due to the surge in AI infrastructure demand.

Consequently, major tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Meta, OpenAI, and Microsoft are increasingly adopting a strategy of building private gas-fired power plants adjacent to their data centers. After years of prioritizing wind and solar, these hyperscalers are now relying on natural gas to expedite the availability of power for their facilities.

Regarding the casting bottleneck, The Information reported that the blades inside a gas turbine's hottest section operate at temperatures between 3,000 and 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit, which is roughly 800 degrees hotter than the melting point of the metal alloy used. This feat is only possible due to internal cooling channels, thermal-barrier coatings, and a specific casting method. Currently, only four companies globally have mastered industrial-scale production, and all are operating at maximum capacity.

The manufacturing process is exceptionally complex, requiring each blade to be cast as a single, unbroken crystal within a vacuum furnace. This eliminates microscopic seams that could cause ordinary cast metal to crack under stress. While this process is challenging for smaller jet engine blades, it is significantly more difficult for the larger blades found in power plant turbines.

If SpaceX successfully executes this plan, a Musk-controlled entity would possess a manufacturing capability that other AI infrastructure builders rely on a tiny oligopoly for, potentially giving SpaceXAI a distinct competitive advantage that is difficult for non-manufacturing competitors to replicate.

However, this rapid acceleration in gas turbine deployment comes with environmental and health risks. Turbines already in operation are facing scrutiny and federal lawsuits.

In Memphis, where SpaceX has powered its Colossus data centers with gas turbines since 2024, the NAACP has alleged the company is operating without the required pollution permits and controls. The organization cites the emission of smog-forming compounds and hazardous chemicals like formaldehyde, which are linked to respiratory diseases and cancer. A University of Memphis study indicated that air quality in the area had worsened slightly due to the data center's presence.

Memphis is not an isolated case. In Virginia's "Data Center Alley," a study commissioned by the Piedmont Environmental Council using the EPA's COBRA health-impact model projected that emissions from a single facility's eight turbines could impact over 2.5 million people across multiple counties. The research estimated this could result in 3.4 to 6.5 additional premature deaths per year, causing between $53 million and $99 million in annual health-related damages.
