ElevenLabs Now Lets Authors Create and Publish AI Audiobooks

ElevenLabs, the voice AI company, now allows authors to create and publish AI-generated audiobooks on its own Reader app. This expansion follows its recent partnership with Spotify for AI-narrated audiobooks. The company, which raised $180 million last month, initially tested this program with selected authors before officially making it available to all. The goal is to provide an affordable and accessible way for authors to produce audiobooks without the high costs of traditional studio recording. Unlike Audible, which ElevenLabs claims offers lower royalty rates, this new model ensures authors get paid when users engage with their content. Currently, authors receive about $1.10 when listeners spend at least 11 minutes on their audiobook. During testing, the average user spent 19 minutes per session, indicating promising engagement. The payout model is initially available for U.S.-based authors and English-language books, with plans to expand to other languages and regions. The company also plans to launch a marketplace where authors can sell their content directly to listeners. Additionally, ElevenLabs offers AI-powered audiobook generation through its paid plans, which range from $11 to $330 per month. This provides a cost-effective alternative to hiring voice actors and booking studio time. ElevenLabs has already powered audio platforms like Pocket FM and Kuku FM, helping transform text into high-quality audio. By stepping into publishing and distribution, the company aligns with CEO Mati Staniszewski’s vision to expand into consumer-focused services. With AI-driven narration, direct payouts, and an upcoming marketplace, ElevenLabs is positioning itself as a strong competitor to Audible, making audiobook creation more accessible for independent authors and publishers.
