Microsoft Edge is significantly enhancing its capabilities by integrating new artificial intelligence features, most notably empowering its Copilot AI chatbot to interact with all open tabs. This advancement allows users to engage Copilot with questions about their active browsing, compare products across various pages, or request summaries of open articles, among other functionalities.

Microsoft has emphasized user control, stating that individuals can “select which experiences you want or leave off the ones you don’t.” Concurrently, the company is phasing out "Copilot Mode," a prior feature that also accessed tab information and offered certain agentic functionalities, such as booking reservations. These agentic capabilities have since been seamlessly integrated into Microsoft’s "Browse with Copilot" tool.

Beyond Copilot's enhanced tab interaction, several other AI-driven features are being introduced to Edge. These include an AI-powered “Study and Learn” mode, capable of transforming any viewed article into an interactive study session or quiz. A new tool will also convert content from open tabs into AI-generated podcasts, drawing parallels to features found in NotebookLM. Furthermore, an AI writing assistant will automatically appear when users begin typing text on a webpage.

Users will also have the option to grant Copilot access to their browsing history, which Microsoft indicates will enable the AI to provide more “relevant, high-quality answers.” Copilot in Edge, available on both desktop and mobile, will incorporate “long-term memory,” allowing it to personalize responses based on previous conversations. Additionally, opening a new tab will reveal a redesigned page that cohesively combines chat, search, and web navigation. This new layout also features "Journeys," an AI-powered tool designed to organize browsing history into thematic categories for easy revisitation.

An upcoming update for Edge’s mobile application will introduce the ability to share a user's screen directly with Copilot, facilitating discussions and questions about the displayed content. Microsoft assures users that “clear visual cues” will indicate when Copilot is active, ensuring transparency “so you know when it’s taking an action, helping, listening, or viewing.”
