DoorDash announced on Thursday the launch of a new AI chatbot, empowering users to order food and groceries through text prompts and photos, signifying its latest strategic push into artificial intelligence.
This innovative chatbot, named “Ask DoorDash,” allows users to articulate their search queries in natural language, eliminating the need to manually browse through endless lists of restaurants and stores to construct an order. Users can express their culinary desires, provide a recipe link for ingredient sourcing, or describe specific reservation requirements.
In a blog post, DoorDash clarified the chatbot’s core utility, stating, “Traditional search works best when you know the exact restaurant or table you’re looking for. Ask DoorDash is designed for the moments when you don’t.”
This development aligns with a broader industry trend, as food delivery applications and technology giants increasingly invest in AI to foster more conversational and personalized shopping experiences. Companies are actively competing to integrate AI assistants as a standard feature in everyday life; for instance, Uber Eats introduced an AI-powered “Cart Assistant” in February, and Instacart has rolled out an AI shopping assistant that grocers can offer to their clientele.
For grocery orders, DoorDash’s app can automatically compile a shopping cart based on a photo from a cookbook, an image of a handwritten grocery list, or a recipe. The system accurately adds all necessary items with their corresponding quantities and intelligently prompts users to verify if they already possess common staples like sugar and butter, thereby preventing redundant purchases.
Furthermore, users can instruct the chatbot to reorder their previous grocery cart or suggest new items based on their historical purchase data, as confirmed by DoorDash.
Regarding food ordering, users can inform the chatbot they desire a “filling dinner for a family of 4.” The app will then present relevant restaurants, each accompanied by a personalized description detailing why it matches the specified criteria. Results can be further refined with more granular queries, such as, “Show me kid-friendly vegetarian spots with mild options.”
Once a restaurant is selected, users can instruct DoorDash to build a cart with suggestions tailored to their dietary preferences, budget, group size, or past orders.
The “Ask DoorDash for Reservations” feature allows users to request a “table for two downtown for a date-night dinner around 8 PM.” The application will then display restaurants with available bookings, and users can further refine these results, for example, by asking for a more intimate ambiance.
The chatbot is currently being rolled out on iOS devices in select regions for restaurant search, grocery shopping, and within DoorDash Reservations. The company anticipates a broader expansion to more users across the U.S. in the coming weeks.
