Nvidia’s DLSS 5 technology is set to launch formally in Hogwarts Legacy and Where Winds Meet later this month.
Nvidia first unveiled DLSS 5 earlier this year, marketing it as generative AI for video games. The reception was mixed, with many gamers feeling Nvidia had lost the plot. I found the facial alterations particularly jarring; a 15-year-old Hogwarts Legacy character looked aged, and Grace from Resident Evil Requiem appeared "yassified."
However, as DLSS 5 prepares for its official launch in Hogwarts Legacy, the technology appears to have been significantly toned down. Nvidia released new comparison screenshots today, showing that changes to faces are now as subtle as those seen in NBA 2K27. Teen characters no longer resemble middle-aged men, and environmental details have been smoothed out.
Nvidia asserts that developers retain "detailed artistic control" over DLSS 5, determining how the technology is implemented. The feature arrives in Hogwarts Legacy on November 5th and will extend to Where Winds Meet later this month.
Additionally, Nvidia is optimizing the performance of DLSS 5 with an October update to the neural rendering system, expected to make it twice as fast on RTX 50-series GPUs and RTX Spark laptops. "The DLSS 5 October update shrinks the footprint by 24 percent to roughly 118 million parameters while reducing 4K VRAM usage by 20 percent," Nvidia's Andrew Burnes stated. This updated model debuts in NBA 2K27 on October 16th and will be the default for future DLSS 5 titles.
Concurrently, Nvidia released a beta update for its app featuring a faster performance mode for Frame Generation on RTX 40- and 50-series GPUs. The new AI model employs a "faster and lighter algorithm" to enhance frame rates for Frame Gen, Multi Frame Gen, and Dynamic Multi Frame Gen. Although there may be "minor trade-offs in image quality," Nvidia claims this mode is up to 35 percent faster.
