The escalating proliferation of AI-generated music across streaming services is intensifying concerns regarding how artificial intelligence companies utilize copyrighted material for model training, alongside the potential for system manipulations leading to fraud within streaming ecosystems.

However, many music streaming services have yet to introduce dedicated AI music detection tools. In response, the streamer Deezer has proactively addressed the challenge.

As part of its ongoing efforts, Deezer has unveiled a new tool designed to scan playlists from various streaming platforms to identify AI-generated tracks. Announced on Thursday, this free online AI music detector supports 27 languages and offers users from 20 of the most popular platforms the ability to check if their playlists contain any AI-generated songs.

This launch further solidifies Deezer's position as one of the music industry's most assertive opponents of AI music, which could serve as a compelling differentiator for its service among consumers. While rivals such as Apple Music and Spotify have adopted a tagging approach, Deezer actively removes AI tracks from recommendations and excludes them from editorial playlists. The company also recently began offering its AI detection technology to rival platforms.

To utilize the new tool, users simply visit Deezer’s AI music detector website, select their streaming service, and grant Deezer access to their playlists. Once playlists are imported, the service scans for AI content, notifies users of any findings, and even provides an option to share the results. The tool is compatible with Spotify, Apple Music, SoundCloud, and YouTube Music, among other popular platforms.

“By detecting and tagging AI-generated music over the past year and a half, Deezer has been at the forefront of transparency in music streaming. No other company has followed our lead yet, so we decided to make it possible for everyone to check if their playlists include synthetic music, no matter which streaming platform they use,” CEO Alexis Lanternier said in a statement.

Notably, the company revealed in today’s announcement that it is carefully considering future steps, such as updating supplier policies or implementing content removal. This would align with the precedent set by Bandcamp, which banned AI music earlier this year.

The introduction of this new tool closely follows Deezer's recent revelation that a staggering 44% of all new music uploaded to its platform is AI-generated.

The company is currently experiencing an overwhelming influx of nearly 75,000 AI-generated tracks daily, accumulating to over two million each month. Despite this massive volume, the listening rate for AI-generated music remains relatively low, accounting for just 1-3% of total streams. Furthermore, approximately 85% of these particular streams are flagged as fraudulent and consequently demonetized by the platform.
