Debian developers voted to permit the use of AI for contributions involving development, maintenance, and documentation. The policy notes that responsible AI usage can enhance productivity, stating that “generative AI is neither exempt from nor subject to special rules beyond the standards already expected of Debian contributors.”
Voting developers previously considered proposals to ban AI contributions. However, some users are unhappy with the decision; one contributor announced they are quitting the project because they are “no longer interested in anything coming from Debian.” This reaction mirrors the backlash Canonical faced earlier this year regarding Ubuntu's AI stance.
While the project does not mandate disclosure of AI usage, contributors remain fully responsible for their submissions. The policy emphasizes that all work must meet the same quality, correctness, and legal standards, regardless of the tools used. Contributors are expected to review, test, and modify AI-assisted output before integration. The text adds that “blindly accepting or uploading AI-generated material without appropriate human review is inconsistent with Debian’s established development practices.” Although disclosure is encouraged, it is currently not required.
