The imperative to critically evaluate artificial intelligence outputs extends beyond the warnings of AI skeptics; leading AI developers themselves explicitly caution users against unquestioning reliance on their models' results within their official terms of service.

Microsoft, actively pursuing enterprise clients for its Copilot service, has concurrently faced public scrutiny on social media regarding the stringent clauses within Copilot's terms of use, notably a stated last update date of October 24, 2025.

Specifically, Microsoft’s terms issued a clear caveat: “Copilot is for entertainment purposes only.” The company further advised that the tool “can make mistakes, and it may not work as intended,” urging users, “Don’t rely on Copilot for important advice. Use Copilot at your own risk.”

In response to these observations, a Microsoft spokesperson informed PCMag that the company intends to refresh what was characterized as “legacy language” within these terms.

The spokesperson elaborated, stating, “As the product has evolved, that language is no longer reflective of how Copilot is used today and will be altered with our next update,” indicating an upcoming revision.

This cautious stance is not exclusive to Microsoft, as highlighted by Tom’s Hardware. Other prominent AI developers, including OpenAI and xAI, issue similar disclaimers. OpenAI advises users not to consider its output as “a sole service of truth or factual information,” while xAI explicitly warns against relying on its models’ output as “the truth.”
