Microsoft Copilot is discontinuing the use of its emotive yellow blob avatar, Mico, within the chatbot’s voice mode. Introduced less than a year ago, Mico will now be relocated to Microsoft’s Learn Live platform, where, as stated on a Microsoft support page and previously reported by GeekWire, the avatar will have “more to react to.”
Mico first launched in Copilot’s voice mode last October. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman had initially presented the avatar as a means to provide the chatbot with a unique “identity.” Designed to offer real-time responses, the animated blob featured a variety of facial expressions and dynamic animations.
The retirement of Mico places it among a series of virtual assistants Microsoft has phased out over the years, a list that includes iconic figures like Clippy, Cortana, and Rover. Reflecting on Mico's contribution, Microsoft’s support page notes, “Mico helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to talk with AI.” The company asserts that “Those learnings are shaping Copilot going forward,” confirming that Mico’s removal from Copilot will occur "in waves."
This change is part of Microsoft’s overarching strategy to merge its distinct Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot applications. The announcement also comes on the heels of an organizational reshuffling in the AI division just months prior, which saw Jacob Andreou take the helm of Copilot, while Suleyman shifted his focus to the development of new AI models.
