OpenAI’s ChatGPT has emerged as the leading artificial intelligence tool within the U.S. Congress, specifically concerning financial outlay, according to a recent report published by CNBC.
An analysis of House disbursement records for the year ending March 31 indicates that OpenAI secured approximately 90% of all expenditures on AI tools made by House offices, committees, and institutional accounts. CNBC's investigation revealed that Congress spent around $100,580 across 798 transactions on ChatGPT, from a total AI spending exceeding $113,740. Anthropic’s Claude was the second most utilized, accounting for $13,160 across 37 transactions.
Expenditure data also highlighted a significant partisan difference, with Democratic offices allocating $54,165 to AI purchases, a sum three times greater than the $15,782 spent by Republican offices.
It is important to note that these insights do not include any Congressional AI adoption facilitated by free accounts or AI capabilities bundled within broader software contracts.
