Cognition, the startup behind the coding assistant Devin, announced it secured $2 billion in funding at a $48 billion valuation. This latest round, led by Andreessen Horowitz, Accel, Founders Fund, General Catalyst, and Avenir, occurred just four months after Cognition raised capital at a $26 billion valuation.

The impressive growth in the startup's valuation indicates that venture capitalists perceive the AI coding sector as a space capable of sustaining multiple major players rather than a single winner. Cognition reported that its annualized run-rate revenue has surged from $492 million to $900 million since its last funding announcement in May. Although the company did not specify the methodology for calculating this run-rate revenue, it is typically defined as a month's total revenue multiplied by 12.

Competitor Cursor, another popular coding assistant, was reportedly in negotiations to raise capital at a $50 billion valuation in April before agreeing to sell to SpaceX for $60 billion later that month. At the time of those funding discussions, Cursor's annualized revenue had already exceeded $2 billion, meaning Cognition currently holds a higher revenue multiple than Cursor did during the spring.

Cursor ultimately agreed to sell to SpaceX primarily because it faced severe compute constraints, according to investors familiar with its financial situation. It remains uncertain whether Cognition will encounter similar shortages in computing resources.

The Information reported that Cognition leases an Nvidia server cluster costing hundreds of millions of dollars annually, a factor that could push its total cash burn to $800 million this year.

To reduce costs and move closer to profitability, Cognition is training its own model based on open-source alternatives, mirroring Cursor's strategy before its acquisition by SpaceX. Shifting away from reliance on expensive third-party models from OpenAI and Anthropic is expected to lower expenses.

According to The Information, Cognition anticipates achieving $4 billion to $5 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2026. For context, TechCrunch noted earlier that Cursor was projected to surpass $6 billion by year-end. Nevertheless, it is significant that Andreessen Horowitz, a major investor in Cursor that profited from the SpaceX sale, is leading this new round in Cognition.

Established in 2024 by math prodigy Scott Wu, Cognition lists Mercedes-Benz, NASA, Goldman Sachs, and Citi among its prominent enterprise clients.
