Cognition, the innovative company behind the AI coding agent Devin, is reportedly engaging with investors for a new funding round, anticipating a significant uplift in its valuation. This follows a successful May funding round that secured $1 billion, valuing the company at $26 billion.

According to sources cited by Bloomberg, this forthcoming investment could see Cognition's valuation reach at least $40 billion, predicated on the company achieving a $1 billion annualized revenue run rate.

Just three months ago, coinciding with the announcement of its previous raise, Cognition's Scott Wu confirmed to TechCrunch that the company had already hit an impressive $492 million annualized revenue run rate. He also highlighted a substantial growth in enterprise usage of Devin, expanding by 50% month-over-month for the preceding six months.

Wu, himself a celebrated wunderkind programmer, further elaborated to TechCrunch that Devin is not marketed as a replacement for human programmers. Instead, the AI agent is primarily tasked with handling the "long-tail grunt-work" that many developers find undesirable, such as updating outdated software or facilitating application migrations between platforms. This focus on automating burdensome tasks likely contributes significantly to its burgeoning popularity among adopting enterprises, which reportedly include prominent clients like Mercedes-Benz, NASA, and Goldman Sachs.
