Previously, Anthropic's voice mode was exclusively accessible through Claude Haiku, a model known for its speed but limited processing power. The company is now expanding this capability to its more advanced Opus and Sonnet models, while also integrating voice mode into popular applications such as Gmail, Slack, and Canva.

Upon its initial launch earlier this year, Anthropic's voice mode was primarily envisioned for providing rapid responses to straightforward inquiries. However, a recent company blog post revealed that users quickly adapted the feature for more complex applications, employing it to address "real business problems." This demonstrated a demand beyond Haiku's design, as that model, while efficient for quick exchanges, "kept conversations quick, but not always deep."

In contrast, Sonnet and Opus are described by Anthropic as more sophisticated models "designed for hard problem-solving." These models are capable of generating intricate responses and in-depth analysis, and can even execute actions on the user's behalf. Examples include transforming a conversation into a concise one-page pitch or dynamically adjusting calendar appointments in response to unforeseen delays like a late train.

A key enhancement allows users to fluidly transition between text and voice modes mid-conversation, and to switch between different models as needed. This means a user could initiate a quick discussion with Haiku to brainstorm an idea, then seamlessly transition to Opus for a more profound exploration. Furthermore, Anthropic is significantly broadening voice mode's linguistic support. Previously, non-English languages were confined to a beta phase, but voice mode is now fully available in French, German, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Portuguese.
