Anthropic is significantly enhancing its AI coding assistant for developers, Claude Code, by integrating a new Voice Mode. This advancement marks a pivotal step towards fostering more hands-free and conversational coding environments, streamlining the development process.

The introduction of this feature was announced by Anthropic engineer Thariq Shihipar via X on Tuesday, detailing a phased release strategy. Currently, Voice Mode is accessible to approximately 5% of users, with a broader rollout anticipated over the coming weeks.

Designed to optimize the coding experience, Voice Mode allows developers to engage with Claude Code through spoken commands. To activate the feature, users simply type "/voice," then articulate their request, such as "refactor the authentication middleware," for Claude Code to execute.

The Voice Mode is progressively becoming available within Claude Code, with its current live status for a select 5% of users slated for expansion in the weeks ahead. Users will be notified of their access through a welcome screen message and can toggle the feature on using the "/voice" command.

Specific details regarding the new capability's limitations, including potential caps on voice interactions or particular technical constraints, remain undisclosed. Furthermore, it is currently unknown whether this feature was developed in collaboration with a third-party AI voice provider, such as ElevenLabs, with whom Anthropic was reportedly in discussions.

Anthropic has not yet responded to requests for comment from TechCrunch regarding these details.

This follows Anthropic's successful launch of Voice Mode for its standard Claude chatbot last May, which enabled users to interact with the model via voice for a diverse range of general-purpose tasks.

The market for AI coding assistants is intensely competitive, with major players like Microsoft's GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Google, and OpenAI all vying for developer engagement. Despite this, Claude Code has emerged as one of the most widely adopted tools in the industry. In February, Anthropic reported that Claude Code's run-rate revenue exceeded $2.5 billion, more than doubling since the start of 2026, alongside a doubling of weekly active users since January.

Concurrently, Claude's mobile application has experienced a dramatic surge in user growth, particularly after the company's principled refusal to permit the Department of Defense to utilize its AI for domestic surveillance or autonomous weapons. This stance saw the app ascend to the top of the U.S. App Store charts, surpassing ChatGPT in popularity.
