Despite reporting robust financial performance with better-than-expected profit and revenue in its fiscal third quarter, technology titan Cisco is set to reduce its workforce by fewer than 4,000 individuals, representing approximately 5% of its total staff.
The networking equipment manufacturer clarified that these headcount reductions are strategic, aimed at optimizing its “cost structure” and facilitating significant investments in the burgeoning fields of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity.
Cisco's decision aligns with a growing trend among tech companies that increasingly cite a strategic shift towards prioritizing AI spending as justification for workforce adjustments. Notably, Cloudflare and General Motors have also recently announced layoffs, despite both reporting strong financial outcomes.
The planned increase in cybersecurity investment by Cisco comes as the company continues to grapple with a series of security vulnerabilities identified in its routers and firewalls. These flaws have previously enabled hackers to infiltrate the networks of its corporate clientele, including the U.S. government. Furthermore, Cisco experienced a data breach last year that compromised customers' personal information.
In a blog post published on Wednesday, Cisco's chief executive, Chuck Robbins, highlighted the company's “record revenue” and “double-digit growth.” He also acknowledged the firm's strategic commitment to “our employees’ use of AI across the company,” underscoring the direction of future investments.
Public filings indicate that Mr. Robbins is projected to receive over $52 million in executive compensation during 2025. When questioned by TechCrunch regarding a potential reduction in his compensation, a Cisco spokesperson did not provide a comment or response.
These latest job cuts mark another instance in a series of workforce reductions implemented by Cisco in recent years. The company previously laid off thousands of employees across two distinct rounds in 2024 and further reduced its staff by 150 positions in 2025.
