Google announced on Tuesday an expansion of AI capabilities within its Chrome web browser. This includes the introduction of a new feature called Skills, designed to empower users to save and readily reapply their preferred AI prompts across various webpages, thereby eliminating the need for repeated manual entry.

This innovation builds upon Google's existing integration of its Gemini AI within Chrome, a development that coincided with the emergence of several new competitors in the browser landscape, including offerings from companies like OpenAI (Atlas), Perplexity (Comet), and The Browser Company (Dia), among others.

While Gemini currently provides capabilities such as querying webpage content, summarizing information, or executing diverse tasks, Skills elevates this functionality. It enables users to craft bespoke AI prompts that can be invoked repeatedly with a single click.

As an illustrative example, Google highlights that a user who frequently requests Gemini to suggest vegan substitutions on recipe websites can now save this specific prompt, making it readily available for application across various culinary pages.

Accessing this feature involves saving an AI prompt as a Skill directly from the chat history. Subsequently, the Skill can be re-engaged within Gemini in Chrome by either typing a forward slash (/) or selecting the plus sign (+) button. Once activated, the Skill will execute its function on the currently viewed webpage, as well as any other selected tabs.

Google also confirms that these personalized Skills can be modified at any point.

Internal testing revealed that early adopters have leveraged Skills across diverse domains, including health and wellness—such as calculating protein macronutrients in recipes—as well as for conducting shopping comparisons or efficiently scanning and summarizing extensive documents.

To facilitate user adoption, Google is also introducing a dedicated Skills library, which will provide a collection of common tasks and workflows spanning categories like productivity, shopping, recipes, and budgeting. Users can integrate these pre-programmed Skills into their saved Chrome Skills, with the added flexibility to customize them by editing the underlying prompt to suit individual requirements.

Consistent with other Gemini actions within Chrome, Skills will prompt users for explicit confirmation before executing sensitive operations, such as sending an email or incorporating an event into a calendar.

The rollout of Skills commences today for Chrome desktop users who are logged into their Google accounts. Initially, the feature will be operational exclusively for Chrome browsers configured to English (US) language settings.
