China Accelerates AI Rollout, Competing with U.S. Tech Giants
Originally reported bycnbc

Chinese tech companies are rapidly releasing new artificial intelligence models as they intensify competition with U.S.-based giants like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Over a year after China's DeepSeek AI chatbot disrupted the market with lower usage fees than OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Chinese firms are following suit with innovative developments. One of the latest entrants, Moonshot AI from Beijing, unveiled its Kimi K2.5, a model boasting video-generation and agentic capabilities that claim to outperform top U.S. models. This comes just months after Moonshot's K2 model launch.

Alibaba also introduced its new generative AI model, Qwen3-Max-Thinking, claiming superiority over U.S. competitors in a test known as "Humanity’s Last Exam." The model’s unique ability to select the best AI tool for tasks and use previous conversations for more efficient responses adds to its appeal, all at minimal additional cost. Other Chinese firms are following suit with innovative offerings, including Z.ai’s free GLM 4.7 model and Baidu’s Ernie 5.0, which reportedly outperforms Google’s Gemini-2.5-Pro, though a direct comparison to the latest Google DeepMind Gemini 3 Pro was not made.

Chinese companies are not only releasing models but also focusing on making their technologies accessible and affordable for emerging markets. Many of these AI models are open-sourced, offering low-cost or free access and customizable underlying code, making them more attractive to countries outside China. Microsoft recently reported a significant surge in DeepSeek’s usage across Africa compared to other regions, indicating the growing international interest in Chinese AI.

In addition to global outreach, Chinese firms are integrating their AI models into existing ecosystems to drive user growth. Tencent, for example, has launched an AI-driven promotion through its Yuanbao chatbot app, distributing cash rewards to attract users during the Lunar New Year. Alibaba has also made its Qwen AI app more engaging by allowing users to shop, order food, and pay through the app, potentially boosting revenue by connecting users to Alibaba's broader e-commerce platforms.

Rather than competing solely on advanced benchmarks, Chinese firms are prioritizing user engagement and ecosystem integration to grow their AI market share.
