ChatGPT Surpasses 2.5 Billion Prompts Daily, Challenging Google

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is now handling more than 2.5 billion prompts each day, according to new data shared with Axios. Of these, around 330 million daily requests come from users in the United States. This usage rate adds up to over 912.5 billion annual requests, marking a massive scale of engagement with the AI chatbot. OpenAI spokesperson Rob Friedlander confirmed the accuracy of these figures to The Verge. While ChatGPT still lags behind Google’s search engine, which processes roughly 5 trillion searches each year, its rapid growth is increasingly positioning it as a serious competitor in the search and productivity space. The number of weekly ChatGPT users has also seen a significant jump, rising from 300 million in December to over 500 million by March. This sharp increase highlights the growing reliance on AI tools for daily information needs and task management. In addition to user growth, OpenAI appears to be expanding its capabilities. A recent report from Reuters indicated that the company is planning to launch an AI-powered web browser, which would directly compete with dominant browsers like Google Chrome. Just last week, OpenAI introduced the ChatGPT Agent—a new tool that can perform tasks directly on a user's computer, moving beyond simple text interactions and into automation. These developments suggest OpenAI is not only focused on improving ChatGPT's conversational abilities but also on broadening its practical applications.
