Users will soon have the capability to direct the company's desktop artificial intelligence tool directly from their iOS or Android mobile devices.
OpenAI is set to integrate its powerful desktop AI tool, Codex – renowned for its ability to generate code and operate applications on a computer – with the ChatGPT mobile application, allowing remote access from smartphones.
This development comes as OpenAI intensifies its efforts to compete in the AI landscape, particularly following the growing prominence of Anthropic’s Claude Code. The company has reportedly streamlined its focus, scaling back on less critical projects, including the discontinuation of tools like the Sora video-generation platform, to prioritize the expansion of its enterprise solutions. This strategic shift has culminated in a significant update for Codex, enabling it to operate applications on macOS – a crucial advancement toward OpenAI’s broader aspiration of developing a comprehensive desktop "superapp."
The integration of Codex within the ChatGPT mobile app empowers users to issue commands to Codex on their computer for task execution directly from their phone. As detailed in a recent blog post, this mobile interface allows users to “work across all of your threads, review outputs, approve commands, change models, or start something new” within Codex. Furthermore, the company emphasizes data security, stating that “Your files, credentials, permissions, and local setup stay on the machine where Codex is operating, while updates flow back to your phone in real time, including screenshots, terminal output, diffs, test results, and approvals.”
This new functionality is currently being rolled out as a preview across both iOS and Android platforms, accessible to subscribers of all ChatGPT plans, including the complimentary free tier and the economical Go plan.
