ChatGPT is undergoing a significant visual transformation with the introduction of a new feature dubbed "Intelligent UI" by OpenAI. This innovative interface, launching alongside the new GPT-6 model, aims to infuse users' conversations with a substantial amount of dynamic visuals.
OpenAI emphasizes that the new visuals will be highly interactive. Rather than relying on simple, flat illustrations, the chatbot will frequently incorporate elements such as tappable buttons, custom calculators for specific tasks, interactive charts, and editable graphs, allowing users to engage with the content directly.
Aarush Selvan, a product manager at the company, explained that while ChatGPT has traditionally been a text-based interface, the goal is to assist users in "getting things done." Whether planning a recipe, organizing a trip, or learning a new concept, the company believes the most helpful answers extend beyond text.
Selvan illustrated this potential with an example of a college student asking how an airplane wing generates lift. By prompting the chatbot to explore this concept, the system rapidly generated a series of illustrative diagrams to demonstrate the aerodynamic dynamics behind flight.
The company provided additional examples of the feature's utility, including visual aids for complex recipes, diagrams explaining bicycle mechanics, maps for multi-day hiking excursions, and personal savings calculators.
Users will have control over the experience, as the feature is customizable. Much like adjusting ChatGPT's personality, users can reduce the number of visuals in responses if they prefer a text-centric approach. The rollout begins globally for Pro, Plus, Business, and Enterprise users today, followed by Free and Go users the following day.
