ChatGPT for macOS Introduces Direct Code Editing in Developer Tools

The latest update to ChatGPT’s macOS app introduces direct code editing within popular developer tools like Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains. Users can enable an “auto-apply” mode, allowing ChatGPT to make changes without manual approval. The feature is currently available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team subscribers, with a wider rollout planned for Enterprise, Edu, and free users next week. OpenAI has also confirmed that Windows users will soon receive the same functionality. This update builds on OpenAI’s “work with apps” feature, launched in late 2024, which allowed ChatGPT to read code within select development environments. By offering direct code editing, ChatGPT now positions itself as a stronger competitor to AI coding assistants like GitHub Copilot and Cursor. Reports suggest OpenAI is working on a dedicated AI coding tool, further expanding its software engineering support. The demand for AI-powered coding assistants continues to rise. A recent study by Harness revealed that developers often spend additional time debugging AI-assisted code, and a Google report highlighted potential trade-offs between faster code reviews and stability. Despite these challenges, OpenAI’s expansion into direct code editing signals a significant shift in AI-driven development. As ChatGPT continues to evolve, developers may see further enhancements that streamline coding tasks while addressing existing concerns about AI’s role in software engineering.
