OpenAI announced on Thursday the introduction of a new $100 per month subscription tier, a highly anticipated offering for its power users. This expands its existing pricing structure, which previously included a free ad-supported option, an $8/month Go plan (also ad-supported), a $20/month ad-free Plus plan, and a premium $200/month ad-free Pro plan.

While OpenAI's official pricing plan page currently does not list the $200/month option, the company confirmed to TechCrunch that this highest tier remains available.

The AI model developer stated that both the existing Plus plan, which maintains its $20/month price, and the new $100 Pro tiers are engineered to support daily engagement with ChatGPT’s coding tool, Codex. The $100 Pro plan specifically provides five times the Codex capacity compared to the Plus plan.

OpenAI openly acknowledges that this new pricing level is strategically positioned to compete with Anthropic, which has offered a comparable $100/month subscription for its Claude model for some time.

An OpenAI spokesperson conveyed to TechCrunch, “The new $100 Pro Tier is designed to give developers more practical coding capacity for the money, especially during high-intensity work sessions where limits matter most. Compared with Claude Code, Codex delivers more coding capacity per dollar across paid tiers, with the difference showing up most clearly during active coding use.”

It is important to note that OpenAI is temporarily augmenting the Codex limits for the $100 plan until May 31st. Consequently, users who experience unrestricted coding without encountering rate warnings during this promotional period should be advised that this elevated capacity is not permanent.

No OpenAI plan currently provides unlimited usage. However, the $200 plan delivers significantly higher limits, specifically 20 times that of the Plus tier. The company assures in its FAQ that this capacity is sufficient to sustain “your most demanding workflows continuously, even across parallel projects.” OpenAI confirms that while both Pro plans share identical core functionalities, their primary differentiation lies in their respective rate limits.

Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted the impressive adoption of Codex, with over 3 million individuals globally utilizing the tool weekly. This represents a five-fold increase in usage over the last three months, accompanied by a consistent month-over-month growth exceeding 70%.
