OpenAI has announced the launch of a specialized ChatGPT mode tailored for teenagers, consolidating existing youth safeguards with new safety features. This initiative emerges amidst increasing public scrutiny regarding the impact of AI tools on younger users, at a time when other platforms are also implementing their own age verification and specific protections for teens.

Described by OpenAI in a Tuesday blog post, ChatGPT for Teens is “an experience designed to help teens learn, think critically, deepen understanding, and use AI with confidence.” This dedicated teen mode will automatically be applied to users who self-identify as being between 13 and 17 years old, as well as any users the system estimates to be under 18. OpenAI’s established age policy prohibits children under 13 from using the platform.

The teen experience will feature default protections, including more stringent restrictions on prohibited or sensitive content such as graphic violence, depictions of self-harm, and sexual or romantic roleplay. It will also present warnings and safety information on topics like eating disorders. Furthermore, parents will gain controls to establish quiet hours and receive notifications for potential safety risks flagged by the system.

Additional features are designed to foster what OpenAI terms “healthy, balanced use.” These include reminders concerning sensitive image uploads, teen-specific onboarding processes, and customization options like accent colors and voice variations. OpenAI is also introducing new “responsible homework reminders” capable of identifying when a teen might be attempting to "shortcut an assignment," redirecting them to ChatGPT’s dedicated study mode. Both teens and parents can also configure “study hours” to automatically activate study mode during predetermined times.

While OpenAI is presenting this as a novel, teen-focused ChatGPT experience, many of the described protections are not entirely new. The launch primarily serves to consolidate existing safeguards alongside a few minor additions and adjustments. For instance, OpenAI introduced age-prediction features earlier this year, while parental controls and study mode were rolled out approximately a year ago. The company also announced last month that it would provide teens with more frequent break reminders.

OpenAI states that its teen protections are “underpinned by ongoing safety research” and commits to publishing more insights from its learning in the future, alongside developing further safety features to ensure teens can benefit from AI responsibly. The company emphasized, “But that access should come with protections that reflect their developmental stage, reinforce real-world relationships, and support healthy use over time. ChatGPT for Teens is our next step in building toward that standard.”
