Microdramas have become a significant phenomenon in the current attention economy, prompting a wide array of companies — from specialized microdrama applications and social media giants like TikTok and Instagram, to streaming services such as Peacock, Amazon Prime, and India’s JioHotstar — to develop offerings that capitalize on this burgeoning market.
Character.ai, a platform renowned for enabling users to interact with custom AI avatars, is also entering this dynamic space by producing its own microdramas featuring AI characters. The initiative includes a distinctive feature that leverages the company's core technology: users aged 18 and above can engage directly with these show characters, pose questions, and even explore alternative storylines through role-playing.
To kickstart this venture, the startup is rolling out three distinct microdramas: "Last Summer," a romance series; "The Nighttime Game," a horror production; and "Eden Fall," a survival microdrama reminiscent of "The Hunger Games."
Character.ai has stated that these dramas were developed using advanced AI production tools. Looking ahead, the company’s long-term objective is to empower users to create their own unique characters and series.
“Beginning with a studio-led framework, c.ai Series allows our production team to establish the format, refine the operational workflows, and gain insights into audience preferences for Character-native Microdrama entertainment. Over time, the aspiration is to transform these accumulated learnings and workflows into intuitive creator tools, thereby enabling users to develop their own series from original Characters and disseminate them to a global audience,” a company spokesperson elaborated to TechCrunch.
This launch represents the latest in a series of new features from the startup, aligning with its strategic pivot towards entertainment-focused functionalities initiated last year. In April, the company previewed "Lorebook," a tool designed for users to establish detailed world-building information that characters can reference, and subsequently introduced "Books," which allows users to immerse themselves in select classic literature titles or role-play as their characters.
Further expanding its offerings, the company announced on Thursday that it is currently testing "c.ai FM," a feature that will enable users to assemble audio series, alongside "c.ai Reads," which facilitates the creation of fiction. The audio series functionality is presently accessible to a select group of users participating in its experimental c.ai Labs program, where professional writers are reportedly utilizing it to craft serialized audio dramas.
The demand for such interactive entertainment is evident, with Sensor Tower reporting that users collectively spent over 950 minutes on Character.AI each month during the first half of 2026, underscoring a robust and engaged audience.
