Nearly every company attempting to deploy artificial intelligence faces the common obstacle of integrating the technology into daily operations. Industrial giant Caterpillar has spent decades addressing a similar challenge in the physical realm and is now applying that extensive experience to its own AI initiatives.

The company’s foray into autonomy began in the mining sector, where labor shortages and hazardous environments make automation highly advantageous. Today, Caterpillar markets automated haul trucks, drilling equipment, underground loaders, remote-controlled construction tools, and various other autonomous solutions. This offering extends to a software command center, fleet management, and remote terrain intelligence.

“Now we are in a super exciting time where we can take all of that learning from mining and bring it into much more dynamic environments, jobsites, quarries, and construction sites,” Caterpillar’s CTO, Jaime Mineart, explained to TechCrunch on the sidelines of the Ai4 conference in Las Vegas earlier this month.

The industrial leader is broadening its AI application across tools used by technicians and internal staff. Notable is the Cat AI Assistant, which allows field technicians near a machine to utilize voice commands to retrieve repair procedures, troubleshoot potential issues, and identify necessary parts before starting maintenance. Mineart noted that this tool is currently utilized by customers, operators, and technicians alike.

This assistant relies on Caterpillar’s proprietary data, which is derived from information generated by its connected machinery. Mineart stated that Caterpillar manages about 1.6 million connected assets globally and holds over 16 petabytes of structured data.

The firm is also employing AI to power software for site scanning and creating digital twins in manufacturing to analyze workflows, she added. Furthermore, like many other enterprises, Caterpillar uses AI across its business operations and for software development purposes. “We use AI agents to modernize legacy code, generate and test new software, and identify defects earlier,” Mineart mentioned.

However, Mineart emphasized that constructing the technology represents only part of the difficulty, as deploying an autonomous machine differs from transforming a site to adopt AI. Businesses must also reconsider how personnel collaborate with the technology and how existing processes require modification.

“The hard part about autonomy and about physical AI is incorporating that technology into the customer jobsite and into the workflows,” she remarked.

Mineart stated that the company relies on experienced operators to help train AI systems, capitalizing on institutional knowledge accumulated over decades. As machines become more autonomous, some operators may transition from controlling a single machine to supervising multiple units from a remote command center.

This transition presents a new hurdle for Caterpillar: training its workforce of 118,000 employees. Mineart announced the company plans to invest $100 million over the next five years to train its staff in AI, autonomy, and robotics.

That investment is likely aimed at maximizing the broader boom in AI infrastructure, which is already benefiting its top-line results. Caterpillar’s quarterly revenue hit an all-time high of $20.5 billion in the second quarter, driven by strong demand for power-generation equipment used in data centers. The power-generation division saw sales surge 72% to $3.10 billion, and CEO Joe Creed remarked that “no one is slowing down” regarding demand for cloud computing and generative AI infrastructure.
