Boston Dynamics, the renowned Massachusetts-based robotics firm celebrated for its innovative quadruped and humanoid robots, is undergoing a significant leadership transition.

Robert Playter, the company's chief executive, announced his decision to step down from his role in an internal memo on Tuesday, a development first reported by A3. Amanda McMaster, currently Boston Dynamics' chief financial officer, will assume the position of interim CEO while the company initiates a search for a permanent successor.

TechCrunch has reached out to Boston Dynamics for further comment regarding this executive change.

Mr. Playter assumed the CEO position in 2020, succeeding founder Marc Raibert. His tenure at Boston Dynamics spans three decades, during which he held several key roles, including vice president of engineering and chief operating officer, contributing significantly to the company's advancements.

Established in 1992 by Marc Raibert as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he served as a professor, Boston Dynamics has seen several changes in ownership. Google's parent company, Alphabet, acquired the robotics pioneer in 2013, before it was subsequently sold to the Japanese investment conglomerate SoftBank in 2017.

Its current owner, Hyundai, finalized the acquisition of Boston Dynamics in 2021.

The robotics innovator is widely recognized for its iconic quadruped robot, Spot, which was commercialized in 2020, shortly after Mr. Playter took the helm. More recently, the company introduced its advanced humanoid robot, Atlas, further showcasing its pioneering work in the field.
