As artificial intelligence dramatically accelerates the pace of coding, the paramount challenge in contemporary software development has shifted to the thorough testing and validation of this extensive code. Blacksmith has successfully secured a new $45 million funding round to strategically capitalize on this evolving industry imperative.
This Series B round, spearheaded by Peak XV Partners, now values Blacksmith at an impressive $550 million. This represents a significant surge from its $60 million valuation less than a year ago, when the company raised a $10 million Series A. Existing investors GV and Y Combinator also participated, bringing the startup’s total funding to $58.5 million.
Founded in 2024, Blacksmith specializes in assisting companies with the critical processes of building, testing, and verifying software before it progresses to production. Co-founder and CEO Aditya Jayaprakash revealed in an exclusive interview that the startup now serves over 5,000 customers, a substantial increase from more than 700 customers less than a year ago. Its client roster includes prominent names such as Mercury, Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Expensify.
The advent of AI coding tools like Cursor, OpenAI’s Codex, and Anthropic’s Claude Code has undeniably simplified code generation for software teams. However, the inherent quality and reliability of AI-generated code are not guaranteed, presenting a new layer of complexity.
Jayaprakash underscored this challenge, stating, “Validating code is still a bottleneck, and it’s an even bigger bottleneck because people are writing even more.”
Blacksmith initially established itself as a cloud provider for continuous integration (CI) workloads, facilitating companies in executing the necessary software builds and tests to validate code prior to production deployment. The startup has since enhanced its platform with Codesmith, an innovative AI coding agent designed to automatically rectify failed code checks.
Jayaprakash highlighted Blacksmith’s rapid progress, noting that the company achieved a $10 million annualized revenue run rate with a lean team of just 10 employees. Its workforce has since grown to approximately 30, with revenue now reaching "tens of millions of dollars." While he opted not to disclose a specific updated Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) figure, Jayaprakash did confirm that some of Blacksmith’s largest customers are now investing over $1 million annually in the platform.
Despite this robust and swift advancement, Blacksmith operates within a highly competitive market. Its key competitors include established solutions like GitHub Actions and Cursor Automations, the integrated validation capabilities within tools such as Codex and Claude Code, numerous other emerging startups, and the AI code-testing services offered by major cloud providers like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
According to Jayaprakash, his startup distinguishes itself in the market by focusing on both the exceptional speed of its code testing capabilities and its competitive affordability.
Looking to the future, Jayaprakash outlined Blacksmith's strategic vision to expand its offerings into a broader suite of coding tools. The overarching goal is to further empower developers by accelerating the processes of writing, validating, and merging software.
