Attie, Bluesky’s innovative AI assistant initially designed to help users construct personalized social feeds without requiring programming expertise, is now evolving into a sophisticated, open-ended research tool.

This week, the company announced a significant enhancement to the AI assistant: a new feature called Quests. This allows users to query Attie for information and trending news across the wider Bluesky social network, affectionately termed the Atmosphere. This expansive scope includes not only Bluesky itself but also any application seamlessly integrated with the underlying AT Protocol.

The strategic shift comes as Bluesky observes a deceleration in its user growth over the past eight months. While its user base impressively doubled to 40 million by last October within its first year, current reports indicate approximately 45.6 million registered accounts. Consequently, the company is actively pursuing the development of new tools and services to revitalize user acquisition and explore potential monetization avenues.

Launched in March, Attie stands as a distinct Bluesky product, empowering users to craft their own algorithms, curate custom feeds, and even, in the future, potentially "vibe code" their own applications. Although the AI assistant is currently available free of charge, the company has expressed consideration for introducing a paid service model.

“Attie’s AI is a tool that helps you make sense of the internet, helping you fight back against the proliferation of misinformation and noise by giving you the tools to find the truth yourself,” articulated Jay Graber, Bluesky’s Chief Innovation Officer. Graber had previously stepped down from her role as CEO in March and has since been succeeded by Toni Schneider, the former founding CEO of Automattic.

Graber further elaborated on the company’s vision, stating, “Our bet is that tools that help people make sense of the world will prove to be more useful than those that fill it with confusion.” She added, “We want Attie to reduce the barrier to entry and expertise required to learn how to use the AT Protocol, and to put the tools for customizing your experience in the hands of anyone who wants them.”

Looking ahead, Graber confirmed that Attie is undergoing a redesign to incorporate enhanced accessibility features and a new logo, with further modifications anticipated in the coming months.

Currently, the revamped Attie experience is in its beta phase, with invitations to join being extended to users from a waitlist progressively over the next few weeks.

The company acknowledges that a segment of Bluesky's user base harbors reservations about AI, citing economic, political, and environmental concerns. Bluesky is navigating this sentiment while simultaneously addressing the critical need to generate revenue, ensuring the sustained development of both the platform itself and the AT Protocol it champions.

In March, Bluesky announced a successful funding round that closed in 2025, securing $100 million. This substantial investment provides the necessary resources to experiment with innovative concepts like Attie and to explore the strategic role of AI within the Atmosphere, alongside other potential services such as premium subscriptions or specialized tools for power users.
