The common social predicament of uneven bill splitting in group dining scenarios, where individuals might incur disproportionate costs – such as covering others' alcoholic beverages despite opting for non-alcoholic choices – often leads to awkward recalculations or a reluctance to challenge an even division. Apple has now introduced a sophisticated solution to this prevalent issue, unveiled at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2026.

This innovative feature allows users to simply direct their iPhone camera at a physical receipt. Utilizing Siri mode within the Camera application, each item on the receipt becomes individually selectable. This enables users to accurately assign items to specific individuals, facilitating the sending of personalized Apple Cash payment requests tailored to each person's actual order. The objective is to streamline the bill-splitting process, making it significantly less cumbersome and time-consuming.

During Apple's presentation, Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple's VP of Software, articulated the feature's practical application: “If you’re grabbing a bite with friends and point your iPhone at the bill, then [you can] select what you ordered to split the tab with Apple Cash.”

While similar bill-splitting functionalities have been available through third-party applications such as SplitWise or Tab, these platforms have not achieved widespread adoption. Apple's distinct advantage lies in the deep integration of its payment features within the native architecture of its ecosystem, including applications like iMessage. This inherent accessibility makes sending and receiving payment requests feel more intuitive and organic, circumventing the need for users to download additional, standalone applications.

In a related application of Siri in Camera, users will also have the option to utilize their device to access estimated nutritional information about their food, simply by pointing the camera at a dish while dining out.
