Apple announced on Monday a significant leadership transition, revealing that Tim Cook, who has served as the company’s CEO since 2011, is set to step down. Cook notably became Apple CEO as the direct successor to co-founder Steve Jobs, who resigned due to health issues.

Cook will continue in his current capacity until September 1 of this year, at which point Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering John Ternus will assume the role of CEO. Following this transition, Cook will move into a new position as Apple Executive Chairman.

In a statement regarding the succession, Cook expressed strong endorsement for Ternus, remarking, “John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.” Cook further praised Ternus as “a visionary whose contributions to Apple over 25 years are already too numerous to count, and he is without question the right person to lead Apple into the future.” He concluded, “I could not be more confident in his abilities and his character, and I look forward to working closely with him on this transition and in my new role as executive chairman.”

Further developments on this story are expected.
