Many iPhone users may be unaware of or rarely utilize the built-in AI image generation tool, Image Playground. This is largely due to its historically subpar performance, which has delivered AI-generated imagery of lesser quality compared to offerings from Apple's competitors. However, during WWDC 2026 on Monday, Apple unveiled significant enhancements aimed at revamping Image Playground.

While hands-on experience with the updated application is yet to be gained, Apple’s presentation strongly suggests that the company’s comprehensive AI overhaul, powered by Apple Intelligence, will dramatically improve the functionality of apps like Image Playground.

“From stunning nature scenes to fun images using multiple people from your Photos library, you can also transform your photos into endless styles just by describing what you want in natural language, and with private cloud compute, your photos are never stored or shared, even with Apple,” stated Apple Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto during the WWDC presentation.

Ikemoto provided a practical illustration, explaining that for a friend’s birthday party, users could design an invitation by using Image Playground to generate an image of their friend holding a cake. Subsequent modifications, such as adding candles to the cake or altering the friend’s outfit, could then be easily achieved through natural language prompts.

“You also have more ways to use the images you create, like choosing the right dimensions for what you’re working on, including a landscape image for your small business’s website, or a portrait image for your flyer,” Ikemoto further elaborated.

Given its deep integration across the device ecosystem, Image Playground extends its utility to generating personalized lock screens, iMessage backgrounds, contact posters, and various other visual elements.

While AI-generated art often faces criticism for being unrefined, Apple distinguishes itself by committing not to use users’ private photos for AI training, a practice that sets it apart from many industry rivals.
