Apple’s much-anticipated foldable device, the Duo, arrives with notable surprises, including a critical hinge designed and manufactured with the assistance of artificial intelligence and 3D printing.

This new device marks Apple’s debut in the foldable smartphone category—a sector experiencing high consumer interest, though form factors have often struggled with the durability challenges typical of devices that undergo double the mechanical stress of standard phones.

Addressing these concerns, Johny Srouji, Apple’s Chief Hardware Officer, explained that the company has integrated innovative protections into the Duo’s design. "During manufacturing, we use AI algorithms to precisely match each individual hinge with its best-fit housing to ensure perfect alignment, and a confocal laser progressively scans the topology of every single unit, and 3D prints up to 25 micro layers of a custom photopolymer to eliminate residual waviness," Srouji stated during the Surprise and Shine event.

Srouji further revealed that the Duo features a custom nano-texture finish to reduce glare and reflections, alongside a multi-layer lamination strategy aimed at enhancing device longevity. However, the question remains whether these innovative protections will be sufficient to maintain the Duo in peak condition over time.
