Early in the conceptualization of the autonomous vehicle platform, Apple recognized the critical need for robust on-device AI processing capabilities. As detailed by Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, although the specialized car processor was never completed, this foundational work directly led to the creation of the Neural Engine, which now forms the core of Apple's on-device AI architecture.

The Neural Engine first emerged with the iPhone X, powered by the A11 Bionic chip. In its initial applications, it was predominantly utilized for computer vision tasks, enabling features such as FaceID, Animoji, and various augmented reality experiences. By establishing this groundwork for integrated AI processing, Apple swiftly positioned itself as an industry pioneer, further extending the Neural Engine's reach to desktop computing through its M-series chips. Despite Apple's software-centric AI endeavors occasionally trailing industry trends, its underlying hardware infrastructure has consistently impressed, also bolstering the company's privacy claims by minimizing data reliance on cloud services.

Looking ahead, Apple is firmly positioning its advanced AI hardware as a central pillar of its strategic direction. According to Gurman, the company plans to forgo the Pro, Max, and Ultra iterations of its forthcoming M6 chip. Instead, Apple is reportedly fast-tracking the development of the M7 chip, anticipated to launch in the first half of 2027, featuring substantial enhancements to its Neural Engine. Furthermore, the M7 Ultra variant is slated to underpin a new server product from Apple, engineered to support an impressive capacity of up to 1.5TB of RAM.
