Apple's Camera AirPods for AI: Production Imminent

Apple's internal testers are reportedly "actively using" prototypes of upcoming devices, as detailed by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

The highly anticipated AirPods, rumored to incorporate camera technology, are reportedly approaching a crucial phase of early mass production testing. According to Gurman, Apple's internal testers are currently "actively using" these prototypes, which are in the design validation test stage – a precursor to the production validation test phase.

Gurman clarifies that these integrated cameras "aren’t designed" for traditional photo or video capture. Instead, their primary function is to gather "visual information in low resolution," enabling users to interact with Siri. Examples include asking the AI assistant for recipe suggestions based on visible ingredients or utilizing the cameras for enhanced turn-by-turn navigation assistance.

Visually, these new AirPods are expected to resemble the AirPods Pro 3 but will feature longer stems to accommodate the camera technology, Gurman notes. A "small" LED light will reportedly signal when "visual data is being fed into the cloud." While Apple initially aimed for a launch in the first half of 2026, this timeline was reportedly pushed back due to delays in the upgraded Siri. Gurman indicates that the improved Siri is now "on track" for a September release, suggesting a potential launch for these new AirPods around the same period. Apple's strategic expansion into AI-infused gadgets positions it directly against competitors like Meta, which has seen success with its smart glasses.
