The anticipation for Apple's eventual smart glasses continues to build. Following the recent WWDC event and the unveiling of numerous AI-powered features for Apple's various platforms, Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman has provided further insights into prospective new hardware. Among these are the camera-equipped AirPods he previously reported on. Gurman indicates these earbuds are currently slated for a late 2027 release. Interestingly, while the beta versions of this fall's iOS 27 update are being explored externally, these new AirPods are already undergoing internal testing with next year's iOS 28 update.

These innovative AirPods are expected to feature cameras integrated into their stems, accompanied by indicator lights to signal when data is being uploaded to the cloud. This advanced functionality could empower an enhanced version of Siri, providing it with "visual context" regarding the user's environment. This development is seen as a stepping stone, preceding Apple's ultimate launch of its inaugural smart glasses.

Gurman also referenced a second-generation foldable iPhone, which would succeed a model anticipated for release this fall. This suggests Apple's strong commitment to the nascent foldable phone category, with hopes of discovering more effective ways to leverage the additional screen real estate than current offerings. The current market, exemplified by devices like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, often presents compromises such as apps struggling to adapt to larger displays and reduced battery life compared to standard flagship models, all at a substantial price point.

Furthermore, Gurman touched upon the long-speculated "20th anniversary" iPhone models, internally referred to as V73 and V74. These devices are projected to follow this year's iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, maintaining comparable dimensions but introducing a striking "nearly edge-to-edge display, with curved glass that wraps around the sides."

In parallel, the standard iPhone 18 might see its launch delayed until next year, potentially utilizing an A20 series chip, akin to processors in phones scheduled for release this fall. Subsequent 2027 iPhone models are expected to upgrade to a 2nm A21 chip, with ambitions to transition to 1.4nm technology for the A22 Pro. Notably, Apple is reportedly "considering" diversifying its manufacturing partners by engaging Intel for some production alongside its primary supplier, TSMC.

These details appear consistent with previous years' rumors that hinted at the introduction of a slender "iPhone Air." However, with John Ternus assuming the role of Apple's CEO, the pervasive influence of AI, and potential challenges posed by RAM and component shortages, even well-substantiated rumored plans remain subject to change.
