In a significant and unusual cross-border collaboration, Apple is reportedly partnering with Chinese tech giant Alibaba to prepare for the rollout of its on-device generative AI service in China.

This rare US-China partnership comes as Apple is understood to have trained a custom AI model specifically for the Chinese market alongside Alibaba. Such a cross-border initiative stands out, particularly amidst escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington.

Reuters reports, citing three anonymous sources familiar with the matter, that this China-focused large language model was developed in collaboration with Alibaba, with the domestic company providing crucial support for its training.

This move to develop its own custom AI model represents a strategic shift for Apple within the country. It would afford the company greater control over its offerings in China's highly competitive smartphone market. Historically, Apple has relied on existing domestic Chinese models to integrate generative AI into its devices sold there, as US-based models, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, are not accessible in the region.

This development precedes Apple's anticipated release of Apple Intelligence in China. Reuters sources indicate that this launch is expected "in the coming months" following an update to the iOS operating system. Last month, Apple successfully registered its on-device generative AI service with China’s cyberspace regulator, effectively clearing a significant regulatory hurdle for its deployment.

Introducing a China-focused model provides Apple with a considerable advantage as a US company navigating Beijing’s complex regulatory environment, especially given the heightened scrutiny surrounding AI development in recent months. In China, all AI models must undergo government registration and approval before public release. According to Reuters, this strategic move could position Apple as the first US company authorized to offer a proprietary AI model within China.

Apple did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment regarding these reports.
