As reported by Music Business Worldwide, Apple communicated to its industry partners via a newsletter on Wednesday, detailing the introduction of new metadata designed to enhance transparency regarding the application of artificial intelligence in music.
While metadata traditionally encompasses descriptive fields such as song title, album title, genre, and artist name, crucial for file organization, Apple Music will now offer an optional feature. This allows distributors to apply specific metadata tags to indicate the involvement of AI-generated content in various elements of a song, including its artwork, the musical track itself, the lyrical composition, or the accompanying music video.
This initiative appears to resonate with Apple Music users, as evidenced by a recent Reddit post featuring a mock-up of a comparable feature concept. However, a potential challenge with this opt-in tagging approach is its reliance on labels or distributors manually selecting to disclose their use of AI. Spotify is reportedly adopting a similar methodology.
In contrast, other music streaming platforms, such as Deezer, are exploring the use of proprietary AI detection tools to identify AI-generated content. Nevertheless, developing these systems to achieve maximum accuracy presents significant technical hurdles.
