Apple has announced significant price adjustments across its MacBook, iPad, and other device lineups. The MacBook Neo now begins at $699, while the iPad Air has seen its price increase by $150.

These revisions are a direct consequence of ongoing shortages in memory and storage components. The new MacBook Neo, for instance, will now start at $699, a $100 increase from its previous $599 price point. Furthermore, the M3 Ultra Mac Studio has experienced a substantial $1,300 hike, bringing its cost to $5,299, up from $3,999. These price escalations were initially reported by Bloomberg and MacRumors.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had hinted at these impending price changes during an interview with The Wall Street Journal on June 17th. Cook stated that while Apple had diligently attempted to "shield" customers from rising costs, "the situation has become unsustainable."

In the months leading up to these price increases, Apple had already initiated adjustments to certain Mac configurations. In March, the company ceased selling the Mac Studio variant equipped with 512GB of storage. Subsequently, the $599 Mac Mini option was discontinued, meaning the device now starts at $799 and includes 512GB of storage.

The cost of memory and storage components has surged significantly over the past several months, primarily driven by robust demand from AI companies acquiring vast quantities of RAM and SSDs for their data centers. Leading memory suppliers, including Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron, are reportedly struggling to keep pace with the overwhelming demand for these components, which are vital for a wide range of products from desktop computers and smartphones to laptops, gaming consoles, and even automotive systems.

The impact of this component scarcity is already evident across the technology sector, with recent price increases affecting devices such as Microsoft Surface products, Xbox S / X consoles, the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Framework’s modular PCs, Meta Quest 3, and the Raspberry Pi 5. Despite ongoing efforts by memory suppliers to boost DRAM production, the global shortage is anticipated to persist for several years.
